MORE ABOUT ME
I would like artistic directors to know that musicals can be deeply impactful politically even when the content is not overly political. I worry that if the work appears benign or not edgy at first glance, based on a quick blurb, that the piece is not getting a second look and is therefore passed over.
When I'm not writing I spend a good deal of time (and money!) working for women's reproductive rights and aiding, protecting, and sheparding young women to access abortion services.
I am also an avid birder, and take every opportunity to go and see birds. My last play, The Thing with Feathers, is an homage to birders, quirky and endearing, and the world of birding.
Operation Mincemeat changed my current life as a writer: I had an epiphany about how to approach my current project by using a small cast to tell a big story. I know this is not a new idea, but this particular production was a big ah-ha for me. I had been struggling to tell this story in a way that has flow, humor and scope, and this show launched me in a different and more productive direction.
Oh, and I've lost over 100 pounds in the past two years. I am a Zumba Gold teacher, which I thoroughly enjoy. I infuse the workout with Broadway tunes.
WHAT I'M WORKING ON
Two current projects: One is a musical murder mystery revolving around the world of competitive pub trivia rivalries. This one is with longtime collaborator Clay Zambo, and has a theatre attached. The second is my big passion project at the moment: a modern adaptation of Lysistrata wherein the women withhold sex until reproductive rights for all women is permanently codified by Congress. I do not have a collaborator attached to this project yet, as I am still undecided about whether or not it is a musical. I am presently completing a first draft, sans music or lyrics, and will then do a reading to give me a sense of direction.
