Heidi Kraay

Playwright Heidi Kraay flirts with other disciplines to examine the link between brain and body on personal, global, mythic scales and theatrical, expressive, impossible ways. Plays include TrapDoor, Take Me Away, see in the dark, How to Hide Your Monster, additional full-lengths, co-devised plays, one-acts, plays for young audiences and shorts. Their work has been presented where they live in Boise, Idaho, regionally, in NYC and internationally, recently through Valdez Theatre Conference and Boise Contemporary Theater. Climate Change Theatre Action commissioned two micro-plays, Tree People and DreamSong, to present worldwide. Her play Wolf/Girl received its university premiere at Boise State University. A three-time Seven Devils Playwrights Conference alum, Heidi has been a finalist at City Theatre, Purple Crayon Players, the Local Theater and Headwaters Festival, and a semi-finalist at Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, PlayPenn, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Seven Devils, Dramatists Guild Foundation and B-Street Theatre, among others. Heidi recently served as Boise City Writer-in-Residence and Writer-in-Residence at Ketchum’s Hemingway House. Heidi co-founded Migration Theory, where she served as Associate Artist from 2015-2021 and co-devised SuperSecretSiteSpecificSomething and small matters: a big project about little things. Projects in other disciplines include 12 Lifetimes: A Century Cycle, a book of essays in the ancient century form and Drown to Resurface, an album of poem-songs. She holds an MFA in Creative Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Arts from California Institute of Integral Studies and is pursuing a Certificate in Writing for the Stage through PlayPenn (formerly Dramatists Guild Institute). Member of the Dramatists Guild of America.

MORE ABOUT ME
I feel most like myself when I'm practicing writing, Natalie Goldberg style, moving my body (in yoga, Five Tibetan Rites, dance, physical theater practice or hiking) or in stillness (as meditation, Alexander Technique constructive rest pose or somatic breathwork).

WHAT I'M WORKING ON
A thing that might be a play but might be more of a meditative, experiential act of ceremony, ritual, rite...something between theater and facilitated performative artpiece exploring my/our internal wilderness within as I/we attempt to navigate the wild world without. Not quite sure what it is yet, but I'm moving through that unknown daily... Along the way, writing some new short works, dipping into some back burner projects, adaptations, revising some pieces that I haven't looked at in some time. And trying to get my work seen, one play/poem/piece at a time, while taking steps toward forming a playwrights collective in Boise, where (as is true for many small regional cities) getting original creations mounted has been much harder than before the pandemic.
