Mona Deutsch Miller

(Updated: 10/5/2026) I was born in Florida, moved to Manhattan at age 9-1/2, and after a year of misery, missing my previous independence as well as warm weather, I fell in love with New York. I did a lot of acting at Hunter College High School, then all-girls. I dreamed of being a film director. (I was creating music videos in my head.) At Cornell I studied history and Russian. I made a short film in summer school there after freshman year, later shown as part of a longer film at the Whitney. I graduated in three years, floated around looking for jobs in New York and ended up a secretary in Trade Books at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. Then I went to Stanford Law School. California seduced me with its ease, tolerance for multiple lifestyles, and lack of rules, and off to Los Angeles I went, with husband, a fellow Stanford Law student. I had written plays and stories since early childhood, but stopped creative writing during law school and for the next 11 years. Had a baby! I changed my working life as an attorney to part time. I started creative writing again. Fourteen of my plays, mostly short, and one monologue have been produced in Southern California, North Carolina, with school productions in NYC and Texas. Three short plays have been published. I’m a member of Fierce Backbone, a developmental theater company in L.A., the Dramatists Guild and LAFPI. I was president of the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, a volunteer service and support organization for playwrights, for three years. I like to create community. I really enjoy the rehearsal process. I learn so much from the actors. After 40 plus years of practicing law, this is now my full-time career.

MORE ABOUT ME

One desired change - I'd like theater to be more accessible to everyone. It's too expensive to see Broadway type productions - on Broadway or when they arrive on tour. And it's too expensive to produce shows in small, black box theaters (formerly known as "Equity waiver" or "99-seat theaters"). Artistic Directors should know that I'm easy to work with. I have a lot of knowledge about classical music, history, Judaism, French and Russian language. I love learning. I like the way theater brings live people into a shared space, where as they react to what's going on on stage, they're also feeling the energy and emotions of the people around them. It's a unique experience. Seeing people respond to my work, whether comedic or serious, in a deep, connected way, is tremendously thrilling for me.

WHAT I'M WORKING ON

I'm catching up on screenplays I thought of for years, but didn't write. I have some ideas for new full-length plays. I must figure out how to get my four full-length plays produced! I've written a dark comedy about long term marriage, "Life's a Party;" a black comedy inspired by Hedda Gabler that's set during a contemporary pandemic, "Hedda Needs Help;" a theatrical portrait of the "Jewish saint," Edith Stein, "The Choice of the Rose;" and "The Whale's Tale," a lyrical, theatrical mystery about why one female orca killed another at an aquarium, where most of the characters (all people) privately confess to a suggestive sculpture of an orca hanging above them. They've all received successful readings - I need a theater to produce them.
