Helene Galek is an actor, casting director, writer and associate producer who also has a background in sales, teaching and promotions. Although she has been writing since she was a child, it wasn’t until recently that she began concentrating on it again. The “pause” gave her more time to pursue it as she began writing in addition to acting with several artists’ groups. This muscle, like her abs, began getting a workout and soon, Helene was writing essays, poetry and working on her first book. And now, she has learned to stop saying, “I don’t do dialogue” as her first monologue and her first play were chosen to be presented by a well known theater organization in NYC! Helene is now getting up the nerve to write her first screenplay, while she continues performing, casting and maintaining her reputation as master networker and spiritual goddess.

I had the incredible experience doing a two character play that my bestie and I produced for the NYC Fringe Festival. It was an original play; a poignant, biting, dark comedy. Within 45 minutes, I not only got to do a huge range of emotions along with the South Boston dialect, I did it all standing inside a box, with only one of my eyes and my mouth visible. And yet, I felt powerful and so present. Of course, hearing the applause wrapped laughter and the gasps at the venom I throw out at one point was pure magical adrenalin! Performing the heart wrenching story of two women who had to hide their feelings in that small town hit a chord with the audience. My bestie and I met in acting class and we had already produced and performed in an original play 9 years earlier, also playing good friends. This production was the icing on the cupcake that gave us the opportunity to do what we do best so well together and satisfied ourselves as well as the audience and reviewers. WHAT I'M WORKING ON I am writing a book that is part tribute/part memoir, an essay about age-shaming and am enrolled in a screenplay writing program. Also, working on sample scene ideas for theatre and film. I would create a National Theater consisting of many theaters in all corners of this country. The National Theater would be like a spider's web reaching everyone who appreciates and needs theater, not just in big cities, but in little towns and rural areas. Theater people are all our people. WHAT I'M WORKING ON A play about racism. KEYWORDS Family, Children, Political, Nature, Animals, Food, People of Color, Equality, Environmental, Historical, period I have been telling stories since childhood -- it started with the puppet shows and the song writing and then as I moved into acting, I fell in love with plays. I am best known as an actor. I always say, "My writing will be found in a trunk at the foot of my bed when I am dead." When Honor Roll came about I decided to tell myself a different story. I joined New Circle Theatre Company in New York City and they gave me a home for writing. When COVID came along I found Carol Adinolfi in Bennington VT and that opened up creative thinking and led to my creating a project with Adinolfi and Paul Knox founded on Gaston Bachelard's "Poetics of Space" with twenty other writers from around the world. I have been selected as a playwright participant twice at Sewanee Writers' Conference and at Kenyon Playwright's Conference. Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights selected my play "Heywood Towers" for their Shorts Festival and most recently my short "Human Remains" was selected as part of a new media project "Reconception" in NYC. Graduate Smith College and Rutgers University: Mason Gross School of the Arts. I teach at AMDA in NYC and continue working as an actor.

It didn't just change my life, it redefined it publicly. I will forever be known as "C" -- having created her in the NY Production that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994. It is also the play that taught me about structure, rewriting, carving the monologue, landing the joke, endurance, simplicity of language, cruelty, abandon, true love, and heartbreak. WHAT I'M WORKING ON Several things. An historical novel. Plays: (Full-Length) Human Remains; Birds of Paradise ; Three Letters; and Six Ways to Sunday.
